About Occupational Therapy (OT) Services
Occupational therapy is a field of health and rehabilitation for individuals of all ages to develop the skills they need to become more successful and independent in their daily lives. At Gateway, our objective is to provide your family with exceptional occupational therapy services while constantly focusing on the individual needs of your child with autism. Occupational therapy can help your child develop or strengthen their independence in activities of daily living (ADLs) such as dressing, bathing, toileting and self-feeding as well as other areas of functioning including fine and gross motor skill, handwriting, social participation or normalizing sensory responses.
The focus of occupational therapy services at Gateway is to help your child acquire or develop the skills that are necessary to do the work of childhood better! While parents may already be acutely aware of the functional tasks that their child requires more assistance with, occupational therapists can treat these specific deficits with evidence-based practice while providing caretakers with practical advice on how to continue to address them within the home setting.
Occupational therapists are considered specialists in the field of sensory integration therapy. For many children diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder, identifying and implementing strategies focused on managing their sensory systems is of high importance. Furthermore, for children diagnosed with a sensory processing disorder, appropriate management of their sensory systems can result in improved emotional and behavioral regulation, increased attention and decreased frequency or intensity of self-stimulatory behavior or stereotypy.
Moreover, pediatric occupational therapists have a broad scope of practice and can focus treatment on all of the areas of function mentioned previously. We will collaborate with your family to identify and target the areas of function that will be highlighted in treatment.
Once recommended for services and prior to treatment, an occupational therapy evaluation is required to gather information on your child’s history, health status, and to discuss specific activities that are currently limited. The occupational therapy evaluation commonly includes a standardized assessment which will provide the therapist with clinically relevant information to help develop goals tailored to your child’s specific needs.
The standardized assessment typically lasts one hour and assesses your child’s level of functional independence in areas including but not limited to: fine and gross motor coordination, object manipulation and grasping, visual-motor integration, balance, and functional mobility.
Following the evaluation, the provided information and your child’s functional abilities will be used to develop a plan of care which will include goals relating to your child’s current developmental level of performance to promote increased success and independence. Furthermore, our occupational therapy services are delivered with a holistic mindset and treatment approach. This means taking into consideration your child’s physical, cognitive, sensory, social and emotional performance in harmony to provide them with the greatest chance to reach their highest potential.
Your child’s performance and development during treatment are continuously being assessed by the occupational therapist to facilitate ongoing skill development while ensuring they continue to be challenged to improve upon their newly developed skills.
