About Speech & Language Pathology (SLP) Services
Speech-Language Pathologists specialize in assessing, diagnosing, and treating speech, language and cognitive skills. Speech language therapy focuses on making progress toward individual goals developed in collaboration with the client’s family and is highly individualized to provide the best possible care and effective outcomes.
At Gateway Pediatric Therapy, we provide optimal therapy services that stimulate receptive and expressive language, articulation, and social pragmatic skills. Multi-modality tools are utilized to increase success and independence in communication with the intent to help your child communicate their daily wants and needs.
Speech disorders occur when a child struggles to produce speech sounds correctly or fluently or experiences problems with their voice or resonance. Language disorders occur when a person has trouble understanding others—known as receptive language—or sharing thoughts, ideas, and feelings, which is known as expressive language.
Once referred for services, the Speech-Language Pathologist will complete a formal assessment which assesses your child’s functional communication skills. The assessment is based on the child’s developmental level. Optimally, a formal assessment will be utilized and a speech and language sample will be obtained through a play-based routine to analyze language structure and articulation skills of the child.
Data is then analyzed and a diagnosis is given. A speech evaluation will focus on the verbal method of communication, including voice, articulation, fluency, feeding, and mouth strength and coordination while a language evaluation will determine how the child can express him or herself—such as sharing thoughts, ideas, and feelings—understand others, and participate in other cognition and social skills.
Based on the diagnosis and evaluation, a treatment plan and mandate for treatment frequency will be determined. A treatment plan is written with developmentally appropriate and functional goals based on the child’s needs. A treatment mandate and frequency will be determined and discussed with families prior to the initiation of treatment.
In treatment, speech therapists utilize a variety of strategies and techniques in both structured and play-based settings to enhance learning in a natural environment. Benefits of speech therapy include increasing receptive language skills, increasing overall cognitive skills, and increasing expressive language skills through either visual support or verbal output. The speech therapist will communicate with families to ensure goals targeted at the clinic are also implemented at home to prompt generalization of skills.
Our therapy services target a variety of skills while using multi-modalities to increase success and independence in communication. Subsequently, goals will be identified and communicated to your family based on your child’s functional status. During therapy, the clinician continuously evaluates progress and determines next steps. The clinical team at Gateway understands the goals and desires of each of our clients, and we pride ourselves on achieving results. To this end, we rigorously collect and analyze treatment data so that you are able to see exactly how much progress your child is making.
